Over the next 20 weeks we will be showcasing the Regions of France with a view to assisting you (our readers) in identifying where and when you would like to holiday or to plan a special event in 2020.  Thanks to the popularity of Channel 4’s Escape to the Château DIY, and the dreams the programme conjures up in all of us, we will offer suggestions for chateau holidays, weddings or family gatherings which are accessible to everyone.

Let’s start today with a region which is very accessible from the UK, Basse Normandie.  If you refer to the map chateauxescapesfrance.com/featured-chateau you will see that this region is easily accessed from the UK and serviced by boat and by air.

The weather in Basse Normandie pretty much mirrors that of the southern part of England so if you’re not a sun and extreme heat lover the spring, summer and autumn seasons are delightful.  I found this helpful annual weather site to make your planning easier en.normandie-tourisme.fr/plan-your-trip/practical-information/weather-471-2.html

Basse Normandy offers visitors the history of the D-Day beaches, the World Heritage Mont St Michel, the world famous Bayeux tapestry, the beautiful coastal towns of Honfleur and chic Granville.  For trip advisor details on these not to miss attractions and more www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g187180-Activities-Basse_Normandie_Normandy.html.

Slightly lesser known but well worth the visit are the spa towns of Bagnoles de l’Orne (frequented by the Parisians) and medieval Domfront.  Equidistant and less than 15 minutes from both of these lies the highly recommended boutique Château de Vaudezert with its beautiful accommodation, event space, gardens, pool, hot tub and wonderful hostess Karen (I can personally attest that Karen is an amazing chef).  The Château hosts regular events such as the (sold out) Valentine’s weekend and is now taking bookings for a Mother’s Day 4 course lunch and overnight at the Chateau to pamper your Mum.  They also offer a wedding package for up to 40 people from just £3950. If you would like more information ask Karen

So as promised here are a few other options for château accommodation, weddings, corporate or special events in Basse Normandy:

How to get to this area:  Easily accessed by boat from Portsmouth-Caen or from Poole-Cherbourg.  Flights available from Southend to the regional airports at Caen and Honfleur.  In addition, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is just a 2-hour drive and there are regular direct train connections from Paris to all the main cities in Normandy.  Full details for travel to this region can be found on https://www.travelonline.com/france/normandy/getting-around.html.
